The difference between copper slag and garnet sand for sandblasting

1. The inherent properties of garnet sand and copper slag

Garnet sand is a natural abrasive, mainly composed of silicates. Copper slag is a residue of copper smelting, which is relatively inexpensive, but its hardness is not very high. The metal compounds contained in copper slag are relatively heavy, and some particles may embed into the substrate, causing internal corrosion. But as abrasives, they all have sharp edges, among which garnet sand is a diamond shaped 12 sided structure. During sandblasting, more sharp edges can be used to cut impurities from the substrate, so the effect will be better.

2. Comparison effect of garnet sand and copper slag sandblasting abrasives

Copper slag has a very high dust ratio during sandblasting, and the sandblasting environment is poor. Moreover, the sandblasting effect is not very high, so only some rough treatment can be done. Garnet sand has undergone 3 magnetic separations, 4 sieves, 6 water washes, and 4 drying cycles, which has advantages in cleanliness and can completely remove various impurities on the surface of the substrate, achieving the sandblasting effect of SA3. So in terms of effectiveness, garnet sand is much better than copper slag. The volume and mass of copper slag particles are relatively large (taking the 30/60 # product as an example, there are 1.3 million particles per kilogram of copper slag, while garnet sand has 11 million particles), so the speed of copper slag sandblasting cleaning is slow, and more copper slag needs to be consumed per unit area.

3. Price comparison of sandblasting abrasives

Compared to copper slag, the price of garnet sand is indeed higher, but in terms of reuse, due to its high hardness, garnet sand can be reused more than 3 times, which makes the cost of single use much lower than other abrasives. Copper slag has a lower price, but the sandblasting speed is slow, and the cost of sand consumption per square meter is about 30-40% higher than that of garnet sand.

4. Comparison of Sandblasting Abrasives with Garnet Sand and Copper Slag - Green and Environmental Protection

Copper slag has a high dust content and contains some low-density substances, which can cause dust on the working surface. There is also a lot of dust on the sandblasting surface, which requires secondary cleaning. Copper slag contains harmful substances, and long-term use can cause uncontrollable occupational diseases for workers - silicosis. Currently, there is no good solution.

Garnet sand has a high proportion and high-quality products almost contain no dust. Not only does it contain no harmful substances, but there will also be no widespread dust during sandblasting, greatly improving the sandblasting environment. And it can be reused, making it a better environmentally friendly economy under the background of the country's promotion of green economy.
